CIA to remain central force in U.S. counter-terrorism for “many years to come”

Mark Mazzetti of the NYT reports on the enduring, central role of the CIA in drone strikes in Pakistan and Yemen. This comes despite rumblings last year that the Pentagon would handle the U.S. targeted killings. “Despite rampant rumors that the C.I.A. is getting out of the counterterrorism business, nothing could be further from the truth,” said C.I.A. director John Brennan during a speech last month at the Council on Foreign Relations.

The agency’s authority to conduct covert action, Brennan adddewd, “will keep the C.I.A. on the front lines of our counterterrorism efforts for many years to come.”
