Cornell West: Obama a “Global Zimmerman” as Drone Chief

The inimitable Cornell West speaks to Amy Goldman on Democracy Now, where he charges that Obama has no moral authority to dennounce the shooting of Martin Trayvon, given his 5 year command of a global drone war that has claimed the lives of hundreds of children in the name of “self defense”.

“President Obama has very little moral authority at this point,” West said, adding that “George Zimmerman is a criminal – but President Obama is a global George Zimmerman, because he tries to rationalize the killing of innocent children, 221 so far, in the name of self-defense, so that there’s actually parallels here.”

This follows the recent leak of a government document in Pakistan, Details of Attacks by Nato Forces/Predators in FATA, which was prepared by  officials in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). The document states that between 2006 and 2009, and of the 746 people listed as killed in the drone strikes, at least 147 of the dead were  civilian victims, 94 of those children. These statistics come on the dawn of the “big year” of 2010, where CIA strikes in Pakistan reached their peak.
