Taliban shoot down U.S. Special Forces helicopter

On August 6th 2011, the Taliban shot down a Chinook transport helicopter, killing 30 Americans – of which 22 were Navy Seal Commandos, including members of Seal Team 6, the group responsible for assassinating Bin Laden in May. The helicopter was on a night-raid mission in the Tangi Valley of Wardak Province, to the west of Kabul, and most likely brought down by a rocket-propelled grenade.

The incident was the single biggest loss of U.S. life since the war began a decade ago.
