The Afghan President’s half-brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, has been killed by one of his security guards in Kandahar. The Taliban have since claimed credit.
Karzai was viewed as important for security in the South and shoring up support for the President.
He was a controversial figure, reportedly taking rent from the CIA and American special forces for allowing them to stay in compounds in the city. He was also said to be a key figure in the illegal Afghan opium trade.
An important power-broker, his death may lead to an intensification of violence in the already volitile region.
