Militant attack on Pakistani checkpoint

The BBC reports that close to 100 militants stormed a security checkpoint near the town of Makeen in the tribal district of South Waziristan, near the Afghan border. The gun battle lasted for hours, killing at least 8 soldiers and 12 militants.

The raid follows the death of top al-Qaeda militant Ilyas Kashmiri, and increased drone strikes in the region.

Tension has also been growing over a sense that Pakistan is preparing a limited offense in North Waziristan.

Many militants are based in the semi-autonomous tribal regions of North and South Waziristan. They range from the TTP, which attacks Pakistani targets, to the Haqqani network, with fights against Nato-led forces in Afghanistan.
